Arlington, VA (March 18, 2025)—The Overseas Press Club (OPC) today announced that “Haiti in Crisis,” PBS News Hour’s coverage of the brutal gang violence in Haiti, has received the Edward R. Murrow Award.
The OPC judges had this to say of PBS News Hour’s reporting: “‘Haiti in Crisis’ is a remarkable series that takes viewers from the Miami River in Florida to the slums of Port-au-Prince to show the devastating impact of American guns and policy on the lives of Haitians. Scenes of bullet-riddled homes and sewage-strewn streets accompany gripping interviews with the victims and perpetrators of unspeakable gang violence.”
Just added, “All of us at PBS News Hour are so grateful to the OPC judges for this incredible honor. Marcia, Eric, Andre and Morgan all displayed such courage, empathy and determination in getting these stories. When so many other places in the world are understandably in the headlines, we are so grateful that Marcia and her team were committed to keeping a light on the incredible suffering and chaos in Haiti.”
All OPC awards will be presented at a ceremony on April 17, 2025, in New York City.
More on PBS News Hour’s “Haiti in Crisis” coverage:
Prior to being able to travel to Haiti, PBS News Hour’s special correspondent Marcia Biggs begins her series of reports in Miami, where she examines the influx of powerful weapons to Haiti from the U.S. She speaks to American law enforcement officials and politicians who are working to stop the flow of guns that are fueling the violence in Haiti.
Biggs and the PBS News then traveled to Port-au-Prince in the fall of 2024 as Haiti continued to descend into chaos with the nearly total takeover of the country by various street gangs. On the ground, she spoke to many Haitians who have endured unspeakable acts of violence by different gangs. The collective trauma of the country is evident in Bigg’s reporting; however, she handles personal stories of boys being recruited as soldiers and girls experiencing rampant sexual violence with compassion.
While navigating serious security concerns and limited access to certain areas, the News Hour team provided viewers with a nuanced look at the dire conditions in Haiti from Haitians themselves.
The winning reports include:
Widespread gang violence in Haiti continues, bolstered by weapons trafficked from the U.S.
An inside look at how gang warfare in Haiti has devastated daily life
Boys forced into gangs, girls face sexual abuse as Haiti violence robs childhoods
