Arlington, VA, April 22, 2013 – – PBS NewsHour Extra and Student Reporting Labs today announced its partnership with EdReach.us to form NewsHour Extra Education – available on the EdReach Network. The EdReach.us education broadcasting network covers education issues and ed tech innovation with daily programming now downloaded by more than 40,000 teachers, and featuring some of the brightest, most innovative voices shaping the education landscape. NewsHour Extra produces current events, teaching resources, and features education reporting from the American Graduate public media initiative. Student Reporting Labs builds journalism programs within schools to report on important national issues including education.
With today’s partnership, NewsHour Extra, Student Reporting Labs, and EdReach also join forces on the #EduWin social reporting movement, which is accessible at www.whatisyoureduwin.com. This partnership creates a portal for news, innovation, and success stories, enabling anyone to report on education innovation.
Says Leah Clapman, Managing Editor of Education, PBS NewsHour:
“Illuminating, insightful education reporting is incredibly hard. The system is rife with politics, both big and small, and it’s extremely complicated. Reporters can go to experts and educators and ask specific questions about specific topics, but that doesn’t help unearth new stories and relies on traditional models. So we’re trying something new: a space to share ‘teacher-sourced’ news about learning, ideas and solutions.”
Daniel Rezac, EdReach.us’ Founder and Editor in Chief, notes:
“The culture of education reporting has always been that this is ‘weekend news,’ or it’s saved for the last minute on a nightly broadcast. It’s reactive storytelling, rather than proactive storytelling. That’s how you get thousands of stories about angry teachers and unions vs. the millions of amazing things educators are doing every day. With a partner like PBS NewsHour Extra- we’ve created a proactive gathering place for awesome education stories happening all over the world. And with their new channel on EdReach, we are bringing more innovative content to the eyes of educators.
Ken Shelton, California educator and national speaker, says of #EduWin:
