Washington, DC (July 26, 2018) — The PBS NewsHour series “America Addicted” as well as arts segment “Ear Hustle” were nominated for the 39th annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards Thursday. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will present the awards October 1, 2018 at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City.
PBS NewsHour’s “America Addicted” — nominated in the Outstanding Science, Medical and Environmental Report category — featured multiplatform coverage of the opioid crisis gripping America. From first responder burnout and service shortages to reducing opioid prescriptions and a high school for teenagers in recovery, NewsHour correspondents, reporters and producers across beats traveled throughout the United States for months to explore all sides of this epidemic that is killing up to 65,000 each year. The series included coverage on air and online in October 2017.
In “Ear Hustle” — nominated in the Outstanding Arts, Culture and Entertainment Report category — NewsHour Chief Correspondent for Arts, Culture, and Society Jeffrey Brown took viewers inside California’s San Quentin penitentiary where the Ear Hustle podcast is produced exclusively by the inmates. Brown interviewed the prisoners and production volunteers about how they bring the minutiae of life behind bars — tense race relations, the trials of sharing a cell, conjugal visits and more — to the unincarcerated. The piece originally aired on the NewsHour in November 2017.
