PBS NewsHour’s Coverage of America’s Gun Violence Epidemic Named Peabody Award Recipient

Arlington, VA (May 9, 2023)— PBS NewsHour today received a Peabody Award for its multi-faceted coverage of the ongoing gun violence epidemic in America in 2022 and the effect it has on communities, victims, and survivors. The George Foster Peabody Awards are administered by the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. A live ceremony for the 83rd Annual Peabody Awards will take place on Sunday, June 11, 2023 in Beverly Hills, California.

“Reporting on the epidemic of gun violence is an all too frequent challenge,” said NewsHour’s senior executive producer Sara Just. “My colleagues met this challenge by bringing compassion to each step of the reporting process, whether in breaking news situations or digging deeply into the patterns and trends that feed them. We are so grateful to the Peabody jurors for recognizing this work with this honor.”

About PBS NewsHour’s “Guns in America”:
As America grappled with another year of mass shootings dominating headlines and everyday acts of gun violence tearing apart communities, PBS NewsHour was both on-the-ground in the aftermath of horrendous acts of violence and stepping back to provide broader context, telling the stories of individuals and communities affected by guns. Told with empathy, while centering victims, and adding historical and policy context, “Guns in America” represents a selection of PBS NewsHour reports from this past year on America’s unique gun violence problem.
