Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced his resignation Monday, just days before impeachment proceedings against him were set to begin in Parliament over his attempts to impose authoritarian rule on his nation.

Pakistan's National Assembly elected Yousaf Raza Gilani, a top official in slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto's party, as prime minister Monday. Gilani then ordered the release of dozens of judges detained by President Pervez Musharraf.

Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in an attack that killed at least 20 others, plunging the nuclear-armed country into fresh turmoil less than two weeks before highly-anticipated elections.
