Palestinian officials were struggling to persuade Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei not to quit Thursday, after the recently appointed official threatened to resign over a security dispute with President Yasser Arafat.

Yasser Arafat nominated Ahmed Qurei for the position of Palestinian prime minister Sunday, one day after former Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas resigned.
