Israeli Leader Fights for Life Following Stroke

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was in serious but stable condition on a respirator in "deep sedation" Thursday after seven hours of surgery to remove blood from his brain following a hemorrhagic stroke.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon threw the Israeli government into chaos Monday by announcing he would leave the hard-line Likud Party he helped form and asking the country's president to dissolve parliament and order new elections.
