Guyana asks U.S. to help boost its military as territorial dispute with Venezuela deepens

The announcement follows two days of talks among top Guyanese officials and Daniel P. Erikson, deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Western Hemisphere who traveled to the South American country to discuss defense and security partnerships.

Venezuela will hold military exercises as a British warship heads to Guyana

In a nationally televised address on Thursday, Maduro said that 6,000 Venezuelan troops, including air and naval forces, will conduct joint operations off the nation's eastern coast -- near the border with Guyana.

Guyana says it refuses to bow to Venezuela in dispute over oil-rich territory

The small South American nation of Guyana says it refuses to bow to its larger neighbor Venezuela before the two countries met in the latest chapter of a bitter dispute over an oil and mineral-rich territory claimed by both.
