Ecuador will hold six Colombian men as the country probes their involvement in the slaying of a presidential candidate whose life’s work was fighting crime and corruption.

Villavicencio had reported receiving multiple death threats, including from affiliates of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel, one of a slew of international organized crime groups that now operate in Ecuador.

A presidential candidate in Ecuador has been shot and killed at campaign event

The politician, 59, was the candidate for the Build Ecuador Movement. He was one of the most critical voices against corruption, especially during the government of former President Rafael Correa from 2007 to 2017.
