Prime Minister Ehud Olmert averted a split in Israel's coalition and staved off a key coalition partner's threat to bring down the government, giving him at least a few more months to pursue peace agreements with the Palestinians and Syria.

Israeli forces struck a series of targets throughout the Gaza Strip on Thursday, killing 18 Palestinians, including five boys playing soccer near the town of Jabalya, as a new round of violence threatened to fuel stronger Israeli military action.

Israel agreed Monday to allow some power plant fuel, medicine and food into the Gaza Strip, at least temporarily easing a blockade on the Hamas ruled-territory, which was imposed in retaliation for recent rocket attacks on southern Israel.

After months of negotiations, Palestinian rival factions Hamas and Fatah on Thursday finalized a unity government in an effort to end violence between the groups and lead the Palestinians out of yearlong international isolation.

Tensions between members of Hamas and Fatah intensified Friday when authorities at a Gaza border crossing briefly detained a senior Hamas official trying to enter the territory with the equivalent of $800,000 in cash hidden under his clothing.
