A U.N. tribunal convicted a senior Rwandan military officer Thursday of orchestrating Africa's largest genocide in modern history and sentenced him to life in prison for masterminding the deaths of thousands of Tutsis and moderate Hutus in 1994.

Militia violence in eastern Congo has left many civilians dead in its wake. A Hoover Institution fellow and independent journalist details the causes of the fighting, the combatants involved in this civil war and limits on U.N. troops' involvement.

The United Nations said Friday that rebels have torched refugee camps in eastern Congo, forcing 50,000 people already displaced by the violence out of the camps.
