Oregon law rolling back drug decriminalization takes effect, making possession a crime again

The new law taking effect Sunday, which passed with the support of Republican lawmakers who had long opposed decriminalization, makes possessing small amounts of hard drugs a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail.

Police in Oregon can no longer arrest someone for possession of small amounts of heroin, methamphetamine and other hard drugs. Instead, those found in possession would face a $100 fine or a health assessment.
