Anti-Putin activist arrested after attending rally

Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny was detained Tuesday after breaking his house detention to attend a protest outside the Kremlin.

Earlier in the day, Navalny was found guilty of fraud and handed a three-and-a-half-year suspended sentence. His brother was given the same sentence, but it was not suspended, so he was sent to jail. The two were convicted of defrauding a French cosmetics company and ordered to pay a 500,000 ruble (about $8,800) fine and 4 million rubles ($77,000) in damages.

Navalny, an anti-corruption activist and vocal opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, had been under house arrest since February.

He tweeted that he was going to attend the unsanctioned rally Tuesday evening, and police detained him there.
