Protests spread to northern Israel after teen found burned

Anti-Israeli protests spread from Jerusalem into northern Israel Saturday after Palestinian news services reported the Arab teen found dead on Wednesday was burned alive.

Some Palestinian protestors called for a new intifada and threw rocks at Israeli police, who retaliated with stun grenades.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Israeli Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said violence started in northern Israel early Saturday morning, when protestors hit police with rocks and firebombs.

The protestors accuse Israeli extremists of killing of 16-year-old Mohammad Abu Khieder, whose remains were found in a forest on Wednesday. The protestors believe the murder was committed out of revenge for the three Israeli teenagers who were abducted and later found dead on June 30.

Since the Israeli teens were abducted in early June, tensions in the region have intensified.

Israel has launched at least 70 air strikes at targets in Gaza, and Palestinians have fired over 150 rockets at southern Israel, including ten on Saturday, the AP reports.
