German Authorities Charge Suspected Sept. 11 Accomplice

Mounir El Motassadeq, 28, will face criminal charges “because of his participation in the terrorist attack in the United States on Sept. 11,” German authorities said. Officials did not announce specific charges.

Motassadeq is suspected of managing one of the Sept. 11 hijackers’ bank accounts, allegedly allowing access to funds that helped finance the attacks.

Three of the key hijackers were based in Germany, and authorities believe that Motassadeq, a former electrical engineering student, attended Hamburg’s Technical University with two of them — Mohammed Atta and Marwan Al Shehhi.

Authorities believe Motassadeq may have managed Shehhi’s Hamburg bank account, which helped finance the hijackers’ flight training and U.S. residence permits.

Although Motassadeq has admitted he knew Atta and Shehhi, he has denied any involvement in the attacks on the U.S.
