Iran confirms sentencing of Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian

Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian, who has been held in an Iranian prison for 16 months, was sentenced for an unspecified prison term on Sunday. He was convicted last month on charges including espionage.

A spokesman for Iran’s judiciary confirmed the sentencing in a statement posted on an Iranian television station’s website.

Rezaian’s lawyer Leila Ashan told the Associated Press that she had not been told about the verdict nor details of the sentencing.

Rezaian, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen, was working for the Washington Post when he and his wife, along with two photojournalists, were detained on July 22, 2014. The others were later released.

Rezaian’s brother Ali Rezaian issued a statement critical of the Iranian judicial procedures. “Although we cannot confirm the validity of these reports, we do know that the Iranian judicial process around Jason’s case has been profoundly flawed from the outset,” he said.
