Joplin Officials Release List of 232 Missing After Tornado

Updated 2:14 p.m. EDT | Four days after a massive tornado ripped through the city of Joplin, Mo., officials are releasing the names of 232 people who remain missing — on top of the 125 confirmed dead and 900 injured in the twister.

The Missouri Department of Public safety has posted the full list of names here.

The Associated Press reports that the first person on the list is in fact very much alive. Reporters found Sally Adams, 75, at a home nearby her house — which was destroyed in the storm. “Get me off of there!” Adams told the AP when she was told she was listed as missing. Officials think more on the list will be accounted for as it is circulated.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon said, “We’re going to be moving to take over that part of the operation to get this information out much more quickly and respectfully for these families that need to hear the information about the loved ones who are — have been lost.”

There are also online forums and maps working to help spread the word about missing people in Joplin as well as a Facebook pages on the rescue and recovery effort.

The tornado in Joplin was followed by more twisters in Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma that claimed 16 more lives. The Joplin tornado is believed to be the most deadly in the United States in 60 years.
