Monday: Abdulmutallab Due in Court; U.N. Nuclear Head Criticizes Iran

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.jpgUmar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a Northwest Airlines international flight on Christmas Day is returning to court Monday, following reports that his lawyers have talked to prosecutors several times about a plea deal.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds is expected to set a trial date Monday. Abdulmutallab was arraigned on six charges, including the attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

U.N. Nuclear Head Criticizes Iran

Yukiya Amano, the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency warned Monday that Iran’s lack of full cooperation with his inspectors means that he cannot confirm that all of Tehran’s atomic activities are peaceful. The International Atomic Energy Agency report also noted that Iran continued to enrich uranium in defiance of five U.N. Security Council resolutions.

New Fire Erupts in Colorado

A new wildfire broke out in northern Colorado on Sunday, forcing hundreds of residents to flee and destroying one home just as Boulder residents 35 miles away returned to scorched homes in one of the worst fires in state history.

The Associated Press reports: The wildfire near Loveland quickly grew from just a few acres Sunday morning to more than 600 acres by the evening, pulling resources from the fire in the foothills of Boulder that burned 10 square miles and destroyed 166 homes.
