NATO air strike kills five Afghan soldiers

A NATO-led air strike in eastern Afghanistan killed five soldiers Thursday, Reuters has reported.

“This attack, NATO has admitted to me they did it mistakenly,” Afghan President Hamid Karzai said, according to the Associated Press. “We will investigate the issue and then speak about it.” Talking during a visit to Sri Lanka, Karzai said he would speak much differently if he were addressing reporters in his own country.

The strike occurred around 3:30 a.m. and wounded a total of 17 people.

“We value the strong relationship with our Afghan partners, and we will determine what actions will be taken to ensure incidents like this do not happen again,” the NATO coalition said in a statement.

The strike comes as the United States continues pushing Karzai to sign a bilateral security agreement that would allow American and NATO troops to stay in the country after 2014.
