Russia bans food imports from U.S. and E.U.

Russia announced Thursday that it has imposed an immediate ban on most Western food imports.

“Fulfilling the presidential order, I’ve signed a government decree,” Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said at a government meeting. “Russia imposes a total ban on deliveries of beef, pork, fruit, vegetables, poultry, fish, cheese, milk and dairy products.”

The country is under growing pressure from the United States and European Union pushing for an end to the Kremlin’s support of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an order for the ban on Wednesday, pushing back against additional sanctions imposed by the U.S. and E.U. on Russia’s banking, defense and energy sectors.

The new measures strike a blow to farmers in Eastern Europe, but will not have a significant impact on the E.U’s overall economy, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Medvedev also said Thursday that Russia is considering banning U.S. and European airlines from flying over Russian airspace in en route to Asia.
