At least six people are dead and dozens more wounded after heavily armed gunmen launched three successive attacks targeting a civilian bus, military vehicle and another car in southern Israel near the border with Egypt on Thursday.

A spokeswoman for the Israeli military said the attacks were carried out by a large number of assailants, a “terror squad that infiltrated into Israel.” Israeli security forces tracked down some of the assailants and were engaged in an ongoing gun battle with them, the Associated Press reported.

Biden Touts Importance of U.S.-China Economic Ties

On the second day of his visit to Beijing, Vice President Joe Biden told his counterpart, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, that the two countries’ “mutual success will benefit the whole world” and emphasized the importance of economic cooperation and stability.

China holds the largest share of the United States’ debt — an estimated $1 trillion — and has criticized the United States for accumulating such a heavy debt burden.

Xi, who is expected to make a reciprocal visit to Washington, is on course to become the next leader of the Communist Party.

Biden and Xi are also expected to discuss the proposed sale of fighter jets to Taiwan, a move China opposes. The Obama administration is considering selling F-16s to Taiwan.

An attack on a U.S. military base in eastern Afghanistan and an attack on a passenger bus in western Afghanistan killed 26 people Thursday.

A truck carrying explosives crashed through the gates of the base in Paktia province, killing two and injuring nine others. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

In Herat, a passenger bus hit a roadside bomb, killing 24 and wounding 11 others.

The violence mirrored similar politically motivated attacks in recent months, which killed more than 300 people in July.
