Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels sign cease-fire deal

Updated at 10:31 a.m. EDT | Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists have signed a cease-fire deal aimed at ending five months of fighting. It was set to begin at 11 a.m. EDT Friday.

The announcement came after representatives of Ukraine, Russia, the pro-Russian separatists and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe met in Minsk, the capital of Belarus.

“I count on this agreement, including the ceasing of fire and the freeing of hostages, to be precisely observed,” Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said in a statement.

The agreement was expected as Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier this week that a truce was expected to emerge from the talks in Minsk.
