Ukrainian army troops have regained control over a small airport near Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine on Tuesday, according to Ukraine’s acting president Oleksandr Turchynov.
This is Turchynov’s first military action against the separatists, which he describes as an “anti-terrorist operation.” The airport had been occupied by pro-Russian militiamen.
Numerous government buildings and airports in eastern Ukraine have been occupied by militiamen in recent upheaval from pro-Moscow unrest. Kramatorsk is just south of the city of Slovyansk — which is approximately 100 miles from the Russian border and was seized last weekend by gunmen.
Despite reports of heavy gunfire, there were no casualties confirmed.
