Pakistani Court Acquits CIA Contractor of Murders

A Pakistani court in Lahore has acquitted CIA contractor Raymond Davis of murder. Davis was held after he shot and killed two Pakistanis he said were trying to rob him. A third died after being struck by a vehicle rushing to aid Davis.

Relatives of the victims confirmed receiving “blood money” in the case and were in court for the acquittal. The exchange is allowed by Pakistani law.

Davis, a 36-year-old former Green Beret, was arrested on Jan. 27, setting off a tense diplomatic situation as the United States pushed for David to be granted diplomatic immunity and released. The case raised public ire and stirred anti-American sentiments in Lahore, the capital of Punjab Province. Many called for a severe punishment, insisting the two people he killed were innocent.

After his arrest it was revealed that Davis was working for the CIA. His exact role is unclear.
