Create a Kid’s Calendar in Two Ways

Waiting for big events like birthdays, holidays, or the start of school are great opportunities to for your child to learn to keep track of days and months. These activities will help your child become familiar with using a calendar.
Show your child how you use a calendar — whether it’s digital or handwritten. Explain how you keep track of important details, like Grandma’s birthday or when you need to go to work.

Dress Up a Recycled Calendar and Learn About the Days of the Week
Does your young child know the days of the week? Help them learn by looking at a calendar together and talking about each day. Remind your child of different activities they do each day and ask them questions about things they normally do throughout the week.

Help your child create their own calendar as a reminder of what they do on different days of the week. Invite your child to decorate day squares on a store-bought or recycled calendar to reflect some of the activities that they do on certain days.

Then, encourage your child to draw pictures to represent certain months. Tape these pictures over the pictures in the store-bought or recycled calendar. By decorating the different months, your child will have a unique calendar of their very own.

Create a Brand New Calendar and Learn About Months
Older children may be more interested in making a calendar from scratch! Get creative together making calendar pages for each month. To start, create a 7x5 grid of blank squares on a piece of paper. Together, talk about how many days there are in each month.

Write the days of the week along the top. Remind your child that there are 7 days in a week. Show your child that there are a different number of weeks in each month.

Encourage your child to number the days of the month and decorate the calendar with pictures, stickers, or other craft supplies.
