Create Geometric Circle Art

Can a circle be created from a series of straight lines? The answer is yes! Odd Squad agents frequently use geometry to crack tough cases, but shapes are more than tools for the job. In this activity, your child can make beautiful circle art using a ruler to draw straight lines.
Materials
Directions
Have your child draw a circle onto the paper by tracing around a circular object, like a jar lid. Or print the circle art template.

Using a ruler, popsicle stick, clothespin, or paperclip, have your child make evenly spaced marks around the edges of the circle — so it looks like a completed dot-to-dot activity! Or use the circle art template.

Choose any two points on the circle. Use a ruler to draw a straight line from one dot to the other — making a line across the circle. Tip: For a smaller circle, choose two points that are farther apart, and for a bigger circle, choose two points that are closer together.

Move the ruler one mark to the right of the original two dots. The ruler should now be connecting two other points across the circle. Draw another straight line connecting them.
Continue moving one mark at a time to connect two points on the circle until you’ve gone all the way around the circle!

Take a look at the finished design. What shapes do you see? Is there a smaller circle inside the larger circle?
Using colored pencils, markers, or gel pens, color your artwork.
