Explore Feelings With a Rubber Band Harp

By Fred Rogers Productions

A child places rubber bands on a tin container and then plucks the bands to make sounds.

Make this shoebox or tin harp and then encourage your child to take the lead finding a rhythm or beat. Talk about how music can represent feelings. How would you pluck the rubber bands to create happy, upbeat music? How would you pluck the rubber bands to create music that sounds sad? What other feelings can you express through music - mad, frustrated, tired?

Materials

Directions

1

Decorate your box or tin however you would like.

2

Stretch 3-4 rubber bands over the box or tin, spacing them a few inches apart. Using a variety of rubber band sizes works best!

3

Pluck, strum, hum, or sing together!

What are some other fun ways that we can use music to explore feelings? Try these activities from Donkey Hodie.

  • As Donkey learns to hoof dance, she begins to understand the importance of patience and perseverance. This fun family activity will help you explore those ideas with your child as well.

  • Together with your child, make beach bongos just like Donkey Hodie’s and discuss ways that they can overcome their frustrations and keep going!

  • Explore music with your child by encouraging them to discover the sounds that everyday objects make. Then, sing and dance along with them. Ask your child what sounds they like best and if they have a favorite instrument.

Explore feelings through songs about joy, confidence, calming down, and more with the Donkey Hodie Music Video collection.
