Does your child have a favorite dinosaur? Many young children are fascinated by these prehistoric creatures. Tap into that curiosity by creating an alphabet dinosaur “dig” in your own home.

Materials

Directions

1

Cut a sheet of paper into eight pieces. Have your child write the word D-I-N-O-S-A-U-R, one letter on each piece of paper. For a younger child draw dotted letters for your child to trace. While she traces each letter, say the name of the letter and the sound it makes.

2

Ask your child to close her eyes and sing the alphabet song two times in a row. While she does that, hide the letters around your house or yard.

3

Send your child on a search around the house to “dig” up the letters.

4

Once your child has found all eight letters, ask her to put them in order to spell the word dinosaur. Help sound out each letter in the word dinosaur so your child can figure out the order of the letters.

5

Now that your child can spell dinosaur, perhaps your child wants to draw a dinosaur and label the drawing.

6

You can vary the game by writing and “digging up” other words – such as your child’s name.
