20 min activity
A parent looks through a photo album with her children.

While in Scotland, Andy gets excited when he learns that his family is Scottish. He explores different aspects of Scottish culture and tries to learn more about his family culture. Everything excites him — the food, the sports, the music, the outfits. But he also discovers that his family history includes a lot of other cultures, and he decides he’d like to learn more about all of them to celebrate his heritage.

Andy learns it's OK to celebrate all the places your family is from and it makes a very special you. In this activity, help your child learn more about their family through a simple scavenger hunt. Then, encourage your child to capture what they learned in a special scrapbook.

Materials

Directions

1

Is your child curious about their family heritage? What have you shared already?

2

Invite your child to learn more by going on a scavenger hunt with you around the house. Help your child find 3 to 5 objects that provide information about their family heritage. Maybe you can find an outfit, a family recipe, artwork, or colors that represent where your family is from. You could also show a video of a popular sport or play music that’s special to your family. Finally, find photographs that your child can hold and look at.

3

As you discover objects together, talk about them and share why they are special to you and your family. Point out ways you celebrate your heritage today. Ask your child questions about what they like about their heritage and find out what more they might want to learn. Help them to continue learning about their heritage by doing this activity again and again with other objects, photographs, songs, and more!

Explore Further

To create the scrapbook, draw a rectangle on recycled cardboard using a pencil. Cut out the rectangle using scissors. Paint the rectangle any color. Use glue to attach the bottle top to the center of the rectangle. Cut a small square from aluminum foil then glue to the top right of the rectangle. Cut a small square from leftover cardboard and glue behind the rectangle to form a camera. After the camera cover dries, add 5 to 10 pages and a second piece of cardboard. Staple it together and start exploring.

Encourage your child to continue collecting information about their family heritage in a DIY scrapbook. As your child discovers objects or hears stories, invite them to draw pictures or write about what they learned.

We hope you had fun together! Snap a photo of you and your child doing the activity and share it with us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. We’d love to see how it turned out!
