Discover the Magic of Bubbles

Explore some cool science concepts while having a blast with bubbles!

Directions
Ask your child where he has seen bubbles before — maybe in the bathtub or in a cup after juice has been poured. Tell him that you are going to have fun with bubbles today.
Take your bubble solution and wand outside or into the tub. Show your child how to blow bubbles. Watch as they float in the air. Ask your child if the bubbles are truly see-through or if there are colors. Have him touch the bubble. Ask him how it feels.
Ask your child to look carefully at a bubble on his wand. Ask him how the shape changes as he blows. What shape is the bubble when it floats into the air? What happens when the bubble lands?
Talk about how bubbles move in the air. Ask him if they are all moving in the same direction. Have your child blow at a bubble or fan it with his hand. Have him describe what is happening to the bubble.
Let your child try to catch a bubble on a bubble wand. Ask if he can catch a bubble on top of another bubble. Have him talk about what happens when two bubbles touch each other.

Gather items with holes to use as bubble wands: slotted spoons, funnels, fly swatters, plastic soda can six-pack holders, etc. Wave or blow through the "wands" and look at the bubbles. Ask your child: How are the bubbles from each wand the same? How are they different? Are the bubbles connected or single? Does the size of the openings in the wand make a difference in the size of the bubbles?
