Create a friend for June: Use a variety of shapes cut from construction paper, made from bending pipe cleaners, or collected from nature like leaves, pine cones, or pebbles to create a friend for June. As your child works, encourage them to say the name of each shape out loud. Be sure to add details and name the character to bring their character to life.
Name and trace the shapes of the "Count On June Bug!" characters from the Puppets for Storytelling printable.
Notice shapes around your house or in your neighborhood. Look for a specific shape each time you go on an outing. How many circles can you find at the library? How many rectangles can you find on your way to the park? For early learners, bring a paper cutout of the shape with you as you search.
Draw shapes in sand or dirt with a stick. Then have fun guessing the shape that someone else draws. You can also explore patterns in the sand by drawing a circle, then a square, then a circle, then a square.
Like CeCe, children can create a mosaic out of natural materials. Collect objects like leaves, acorns, pebbles, grass blades, wildflowers, seeds, or sticks. Notice and identify the shapes of each object. Then, arrange the objects into a mosaic picture.
