Explore Wind With a Windsock

Cat “knows a lot about that,” and the wind is no exception! From wind-powered energy to flying kites, he’s a fan! You can learn along with Cat as you and your child measure the wind’s power with a windsock made of recycled materials.
Materials
Directions
Remove the label from the bottle. Draw a line around the top and bottom of the bottle.

Cut around these lines to make a cylinder. Be careful as you cut, as the plastic can be sharp.

Punch holes every 2 inches along the bottom edge.

Punch two holes along the top edge across from each other.

Use stickers, colorful tape or paper to decorate the body of the windsock.

Cut long strips from the plastic bags.

Thread the strips through the bottom holes and tie tightly!

Make a handle with the string.

Test how the windsock moves inside. Ask your child, "How can we make the windsock move?"

Go outside and hold the windsock out with your arm. This time, don’t move your arm. Ask your child, “Is the windsock moving now? Why or why not?”

Encourage your child to observe the windsock each day and record what they notice on the observation chart. Ask your child, “What do you notice about the weather today? Is it affecting the windsock?”

Continue exploring wind! Ask your child what they hear or feel when it's windy.
