Need a boredom-buster for kids of all ages? Try these easy DIY balloon poppers. You can use the finished product to sneak in a lesson about averaging numbers with older kids, and introduce younger children to vocab words about distance and height.

Materials

Directions

1

Tie a knot in the balloon.

2

Cut off the top of the balloon.

3

Place the balloon over the cardboard tube. Now place a pom pom inside, pull back on the balloon, and let it go!

4

Try measuring how far the pom pom traveled, by sight or with a tape measurer. Talk about what might make the pom pom end up further away or closer to you. (“What do you think would happen if we pulled back on the balloon just a little bit? What if we pulled it back all the way? How far do you think the pom pom will go if we point the balloon popper up at the sky?”) With older children, you can take this further by launching several pom poms and calculating the mean, median, and mode of the distances.
