Make a Bubble Bottle Fish

We can all do something to help keep our oceans healthy. In this activity, kids will upcycle materials that are commonly discarded into the sea to make their own plastic bottle fish.
Materials
Directions
Remove any labels and lids from the bottles and set them aside for recycling.
Cut bubble wrap the same size as the bottles and tape it around the middle of the bottles.
Using foam paint and foam brushes, color the bubble wrap. For a dotted, textured look, try to paint only the top of the bubbles on the wrap or use several different colors. Paint eyes and set aside to dry. For variety, use several paint colors on each fish. (If you don’t have bubble wrap, you can fill the bottles with shredded recycled paper.)

Cut out fins and fish tails from construction paper and tape them onto the bottles.

Glue your fish onto a mural or hang them on a mobile! If you hang them, tie a string around the middle of the fish before you tape on the fins.

Have a conversation with your child about how every year, 8 metric tons of plastic is dumped into the ocean – that’s over 17,000 pounds. What happens when plastic bottles end up in the sea? What does it do to marine life? What does it do to our beaches?
