A girl holds a DIY fairy house.

Making a magical fairy house is a fun way to engage with your child in pretend play. Just like Pinkalicious and Peter built a house for the fairies that live in Pinkville, your child can build a DIY fairy house too.

Show your child the glass jar and suggest starting with that as a base for your fairy house. Ask your child to imagine what a fairy house looks like. How will the fairy come in and out of the house? How would you like to decorate the inside of the house? Find household items, or go outside to collect items for decorating.

Directions

1

The first step in creating your DIY fairy house is to paint the jar. You can use a thin paintbrush or a paint marker to help your child draw a large upside-down U on the glass jar to create a door. Then have your child paint a square or circle to create a window. Add one line down and one line across in the window to create window panes. Allow the paint to dry.

2

Help your child use a paintbrush to paint the rest of the jar in their favorite color or pattern. Let the paint dry and then add a second coat of paint if necessary. Talk about why a fairy might like those colors or patterns.

3

While your jar is drying, paint the jar lid a different color or pattern from the jar. Let it dry in between coats.

4

After your jar is completely dry, help your child place rocks, moss, sticks or other decorations inside the jar. You can use twine to connect to sticks to make a fairy perch. Ask your child if there is anything else they want to add to the DIY fairy house.

5

Optional: Add a fairy to any other small character toy that will fit in the jar.

6

Place the lid on your jar.

7

Play pretend with the fairy and their new DIY fairy house. A game of catching fireflies is a fun way to start. Play outside in nice weather or bring the game of pretend inside when it’s raining.
