Three children smile with their heart necklaces.

For Valentine's Day, the Fuentes family is making thoughtful Valentine's Day presents for each other! Rosie’s Papá is writing a song, Mom is baking cookies, and her sister Crystal is making everyone their own special Valentine’s Day necklace. You can follow these instructions and make your own heart necklace just like Crystal!

Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate all the people you love. One way your child can participate in the festivities is to show care and appreciation to their family, friends, or fellow community members. Involve your child by asking them who they want to celebrate. Some ways your child can do so are writing a card, making a gift, or doing an act of kindness. Try making this heart necklace together to give to family and friends.

Materials

Directions

1

Start by using the cardboard to make heart shapes for your necklace. Invite your child to draw 5 hearts of gradually larger sizes onto the cardboard with a pencil. Don’t worry if the hearts aren’t perfectly symmetrical or heart-shaped.

2

Cut out the hearts. Use a sharp pencil to poke two holes at the top of the largest heart for you to attach the yarn to later.

3

Glue the hearts together. Don’t worry if the hearts aren’t stacked up perfectly.

4

Once the glue is dry, encourage your child to decorate the hearts using markers, paints, stickers. If you are painting the hearts, you can also add stickers when the paint dries.

5

To finish, invite your child to help thread one end of the yarn through a hole and tie a knot. Thread the other end of the yarn through the second hole and tie another knot. Your child may wish to use the pencil tip to help thread the yarn through.

6

Share the heart necklaces with family and friends!

While you’re making the craft, use the time to share stories about the people you are making the necklace for and ask your child to share why they love them. It's a beautiful reminder to reflect about the people in your lives.
