Making art paper is great way for your child to express their creativity and imagination.

Materials

Directions

1

Cover your work surface — things are going to get messy! Tape the backs of the cards to the work surface.

2

Use the painter's tape to cover the edges of each postcard. Leave about a 1/2" border on all sides.

3

Have your child cover the entire postcard with crayon. (They don't need to stay in the lines!) This is an important step. Ask him if he would like to use one color crayon or several colors.

4

Mix the paint and detergent together using a 1:1 ratio. Pour the liquid into a shallow bowl. If you are using India ink, pour it directly into a bowl or tray.

5

Have your child use the roller brush to cover the entire card with the paint-detergent mixture. Tell him that the paint will need to dry before scratching the art paper.

6

Once dry, peel the painter’s tape off the cards carefully to avoid ripping the card stock. Now, have your child use the toothpicks, chopsticks, forks, etc. to scratch the cards and make drawings. Encourage him to let his imagination run wild with different designs!
