My Turn! A Simple Game About Taking Turns

Aug 27, 2018

Taking turns can be difficult for young children. There are lots of times when children need to wait for their turn, whether playing a game, or waiting for your attention. Playing this game can help children practice waiting while the other player(s) take their turn.

Directions

1

Cut paper into 3x5-inch pieces (or use index cards) to create instruction cards.

2

Ask your child to think of activities to write on the cards, like:

  • Clap your hands
  • Whisper “no, thank you”
  • Turn around
  • Touch your toes
  • Shout “yes, please!”
  • Say your name
  • Knock on the door
3

Mix up the cards.

4

Have your child pick a card, then roll a die to see how many times to do what the card says. For example, if the die lands on four and the card says “Say your name,” your child will say their name four times.

5

Now take your turn. Pick a card and roll a die to see how many times you do the action.

6

Then it's your child's turn again to pick another card and do that action.

If you are playing with more than two people, go around in a circle to make sure everyone gets one turn before starting a second round of turns.
