Paint the View From Your Window

Ask your child what some of their favorite things are in your neighborhood. Let them know that for some people it might be the trees, while for others it might be the cars or the houses. Every person may have something different that's their favorite thing and that’s okay. Invite your child to draw or paint a picture of what they observe outside, including all of their favorite things.
Talk About It: Alma asks her friend Andre to help her with a mural, but he keeps changing her design. Alma realizes she has to speak up and let him know how she feels about the changes he is making. Like Alma, If someone tells your child to change their drawing or painting, encourage your child to speak up and let the person know how they feel about the changes. They can share that their painting represents how they see your neighborhood. The way they see your neighborhood might be different, and that’s okay. That is what makes everyone's art special.

Directions
Have your child sit at a table in front of a window. What do they see? Encourage your child to pay attention to the people, places and things around them. Do they see trees, cars, signs, animals, or neighbors? What else do they see?
Have your child look out the window again and then start drawing the different things they observe. Ask them if there is anything really special that they love in the neighborhood? Encourage your child to add the things that are special to them to their drawing.

Add paint to the drawing. Your child can use just a little paint to emphasize certain parts of the picture or add paint to the whole drawing. Talk about how they can use the drawing and painting tools to best show their view of your neighborhood.
