Plant a Terrarium

Plants in the wilderness need light, water, and soil to grow. You and your child can create a self-sufficient terrarium in your home. A terrarium is a micro-environment: moisture evaporates, then condensates and falls back down (just like rain) in an enclosed glass container. Bring the great outdoors inside!

Materials

Directions

1

Line the bottom of your jar with a layer of pebbles. Top this layer with potting soil.

2

Place the small indoor plants in the soil. Add just enough water to make the soil damp but not soggy.

3

Decorate the terrarium with shells, small toys, or moss.

4

Place the lid on the jar. Set your terrarium somewhere it can receive indirect sunlight.

5

Encourage your child to observe the terrarium every day and keep track of the changes in a journal. What do plants need to grow (water, light, and soil)? Does your plant have all three? Do you need to add more water to a terrarium – why or why not?
