Play Letter Hopscotch

Recognizing each letter is one of the first steps of the reading process – but learning letter names outside of alphabetical order can be challenging. This activity gets the brain and the body moving and learning together. Grab some sidewalk chalk and take learning outdoors by making a letter hopscotch.

Directions
Choose a large area on a sidewalk or driveway to create the hopscotch grid.

Create a nine by nine grid of squares. Write a letter in each square with chalk. Be sure to use at least two vowels in the grid.

As your child hops from square to square, ask them to say the corresponding letter and make its sound. For example: “M. M says mmmmm.”

For older kids, you can add extra squares. See if they spell short words while they hop, such as T-A-P or P-A-T.
