Play Number Line Football

Help your child practice their subtraction skills and learn how to use a number line with this fun and easy activity. Fold up an origami football, decorate it like your favorite Cyberchase character, and see how far you can flick it down a number line. To learn more about subtraction and how to use a number line to help you reach your goals, watch “The Cyber Book of Records”.
Materials
Make the Paper Football
Make a paper football. Cut an 8.5 x 11 inch piece of paper in half vertically. Then fold it in half vertically. You should have a long skinny piece of paper.
Fold up one of the bottom corners so that the bottom side lines up with the side of the strip, making a triangle shape.

Keep folding the paper triangles up the strip until you run out of space.

Fold over the corner of the remaining paper to make a tab. Fold the tab down and tuck into your triangle.

Decorate the football! Make it look like Buzz, Delete, or one of your other favorite Cyberchase characters.

Play a Game of Paper Football
Make a number line. Use chalk outside or a piece of masking or painter’s tape to mark the line on a table or the floor. Use your child’s hand to measure even spaces along the line to add numbers.

Help your child set a goal for how far they want the football to go on the number line.
Go for the goal! Hold the football standing up on one of its points at the start of the line. Use your other hand to flick the football down the line. Mark which number the football reached on the line. Subtract that number from the goal to see how much farther it needs to go. Encourage your child to keep trying until they get there!
