Practice Early Reading and Writing Skills With Rhyming Puzzle Pairs

Duck Duck loves reading adventure books so much that Donkey Hodie creates a
Great Adventure day for her pal. In the episode "Duck Duck's Great Adventure," the
two practice decision-making on their adventure to the grand finale: an exciting
rhyming challenge with Gameshow Gator.
Just as Donkey Hodie created an experience for her pal, grownups can find exciting ways to bring learning to life for children! Host your own rhyming challenge where each player comes up with a word that rhymes until
they run out of words. Or, try this simple puzzle pairing activity with your family as you search for matching pieces while listening to similar patterns and sounds.
And remember, you can create rhymes in whichever language you are most comfortable. Spending time together while also practicing literacy skills — now those are two pieces that match perfectly!
Materials
Directions
Trace rectangles on the cardboard. (A phone might be the perfect size for tracing.)

Draw a unique squiggle or zig-zag line down the middle of each rectangle to make two halves that will fit together in a special way. Get creative as you draw these interlocking pieces.

On one side of the puzzle pair, write a word that you want to rhyme. You can draw a picture, too, if you'd like — for example, "tower." Consider using words from the "Donkey Hodie" Rhyming Puzzle Pairs printable for added fun.

On the companion puzzle piece, talk together about objects, feelings, people, or things that rhyme with the word — for example, "flower." Write the rhyming word on the matching puzzle piece. Add a drawing if you'd like. You can support early learners by helping them with the spelling. Notice how some words might sound the same, but are spelled differently.
Cut the two pieces using blunt-tipped, kid-friendly scissors.

Have fun mixing up the pieces over a flat surface and finding the matching rhyming word puzzle pairs!
