Sharpen Measuring Skills by Playing Jump, Jump, Measure!

Jump as far as you can and then measure the distance using informal measurement tools.
Materials
Directions
Find a large space with a soft surface such as a grassy area.
Create a starting line.
Have your child jump forward. Then measure the distance from the starting line to where your child lands. Mark the spot with a piece of tape.
Go back to the starting line and have your child jump forward even farther.
Measure again and mark the new spot. Talk together about different ways you could measure the length of your child's jumps. Brainstorm some informal measuring tools such as books or markers, and then talk about some formal measuring tools that can be used such as measuring tape and yardsticks.
Figure out how many blocks farther your child was able to jump the second time.
Explore Further
Line up 20 blocks from the starting line and make a mark where the blocks end. Remove the blocks and ask your child to predict how many jumps will be needed to get to the 20 block finish line. Have your child take one jump from the starting line. Figure out how many blocks your child passed with that first jump. How many more do they need to pass to get to the end? Keep going until your child jumps past all 20 blocks.
