Simple Games That Explore Feelings

Jul 23, 2018

Young children feel many emotions that they might not be able to name yet. And naming emotions is important — it’s the first step toward being able to manage big feelings. Help your child learn about different emotions with these simple activities.

Directions

1

Act out emotions. Show your child what different emotions look like by modeling facial expressions and body movements. Have your child take a turn at naming each emotion you act out.

2

Create a parade of feelings. Invite your child to march in a “Parade of Feelings.” Ask things like, “How would you march if you were angry?” “What if you were scared, sad or happy?” “How could we march like we are proud? Or bored?” Encourage your child to be dramatic with their bodies and facial expressions.

3

Talk about feelings in music. Play a few songs — or have your child suggest some of her favorites. Have her describe how the songs make her feel.
