What’s In Your Heart? Creating a Collaborative Mosaic

Alma likes to think it through when she’s facing a problem—like the time her little brother, Junior, was sick and she came up with a plan with her Papi to help him feel better. This craft activity is a chance for you and your child to do the same: talk, share ideas, and think through how you care for each other and for others. Bring family members together to create a heart mosaic and share time talking about giving and receiving care.

Directions
Together with your family, draw one giant heart on your paper or posterboard.

Next, tear tissue paper or construction paper into pieces or small strips. This is a great way to recycle paper that you have left over from other craft projects.

Sort the pieces into piles by color - red in one pile, blue in one pile, green in one pile, etc. Some family members might like to write or draw special thoughts or memories on a few of the torn pieces of paper.
Work together to create your mosaic. Begin to decorate and fill in your giant heart with the small pieces of colored paper. Be sure to place the paper pieces with special thoughts or memories where they can easily be seen in the final project. Once you have your final design, use the glue stick to secure the pieces of paper to your paper or posterboard.

While working, talk about how both the person giving care and the person receiving care bring their whole hearts to each other. Caregiving and receiving is a partnership. Ask each other the following questions or think of questions that are specific to your family.
- When has someone cared for you?
- What was it like? How did they help you feel better?
- When have you cared for someone?
- What was it like? How did you help them feel better?
- What kinds of feelings do you want to put in someone’s heart when you help care for them?
Just like building a mosaic together piece by piece, families can build a space for open communication around caring for one another.
You can watch Alma help care for family members who aren’t feeling well and connect to more resources on caregiving through the Many Ways To Show You Care collection.

Many Ways to Show You Care is a multi-platform content initiative for children ages 2-6, their families, and caregivers. The collection explores the many ways children show they care for members of their families, while offering supportive resources for educators, families and caregivers through storytelling, hands-on activities, and short-form media.
