Enjoying Music and Movement With Your Seven-Year-Old

At age 7, children’s singing ability becomes more mature, but it is still something children typically prefer to do in groups. Gender differences can emerge around this time, with girls generally showing more of a preference for singing than boys. Seven-year-olds may express an interest in formally studying an instrument or dance, and you may want to research opportunities through your child’s school or afterschool program.

All children continue to benefit from ongoing exposure to music and movement, whether or not they choose to pursue more formal lessons. And as with younger children, parents should continue to provide a wide variety of music choices, particularly as children gravitate towards popular music.
