Bake Easy Mini Pizzas

Sep 24, 2018
Image of Daniel Tiger and Mom Tiger making pizza.

Children learn new skills and feel proud when they help with cooking and other chores at home. As Daniel Tiger says, everyone is big enough to do something!

Invite your child to be the ‘chef of the day’ as you make this quick and easy pizza snack. Brainstorm what ingredients to use on the pizza. Then think about what tools might be needed to chop the ingredients or spread sauce onto the dough. Mix and match pizza toppings to encourage your child to try new foods!

Directions

1

Lay out the ingredients in a line on the table. Ask your child to think about what items they want on their pizza. You may want to suggest tasting a small bite of each topping. You can remind them “You don’t have to like it, but at least you tried.”

2

Spread the sauce on each pizza. Make one pizza bagel or English muffin for each person.

3

Add toppings to the pizzas. Does your child want to add the ingredients in a particular order or just toss them on the pizza all together? Ask your child if they would like to include any of the new foods they just tried. Let them add as many toppings as they’d like to their pizza. Then top the pizza with cheese.

4

If you are making pizzas for other family members, ask your child to think about what ingredients to include on those pizzas. What would each person like? Invite your child to help make those pizzas too.

5

Next, have an adult put the pizzas on a baking sheet under the broiler or in a toaster oven. The pizzas are done when the cheese melts.

6

Serve the pizzas and enjoy!

Talk about the steps you took to make the pizzas. When we cook, how do we know when to add ingredients or how much of each ingredient to add?

Now talk about the tools you used when making your pizzas. What other tools do chefs use in the kitchen? What other tools have we used when making other recipes?

Invite your ‘chef of the day’ to think about where a chef might work. When you visit a restaurant, remind your child that there are chefs cooking in that kitchen just like your ‘chef’ cooked at home.
