Build Edible Nests

Sep 24, 2018

Some animals, like birds, build and inhabit amazingly durable nests from readily available materials in their environments. In this activity, build a one-of-a-kind nest and then snack on it afterwards!

Materials

Directions

1

Before you start cooking, look up pictures of bird nests and talk about them with your child. What shape are they? What are they made of?

2

In a microwavable bowl, heat the chocolate chips in one-minute increments until fully melted. Remove the bowl from the microwave and stir.

3

Add the cereal to the melted chocolate and stir with a spoon until the cereal is covered by the chocolate.

4

Scoop a spoonful of the chocolate coated cereal into the muffin cups, making a dent in the middle to form a nest shape.

5

Chill the nests in the refrigerator for about two hours or until solid and hard.

6

Remove the nests from the refrigerator and fill with candy eggs.

Explore Further

Birds aren’t the only animals that build nests! Reptiles and rodents do, too — as did some of the dinosaurs. Find pictures of different nests and compare them to your chocolate nest! What materials do different animals use? How big are their nests? Where do they build them?
