Talk About It: Adjusting to a New School

“Change is hard. It’s really hard to grow up.”
Change can be hard - but talking with your child can help them better understand and manage life changes. In this video, a dad and daughter talk about the challenges of starting a new school. Watch the video with your child and then ask them the questions below - or make up a few of your own! You can also share your own stories or memories, just like Valerio does with Michela in the video.
In this video from “PBS KIDS Talk About,” Michela talks about growing up and her experience at a new school. Her dad, Valerio, reminds her that her family and loved ones are there to support her. He also shares that he understands that what she is going through is hard because he remembers how difficult it was for him when he was a new student as well.
Michela had to start a new school and make new friends. Have you ever been someplace new with new people? How did you feel? What did you do to meet new people?
Growing up comes with lots of different changes. What is a change that you’ve experienced? Was the change easy or difficult?
How does it make you feel when something changes?
Who supports you during a difficult change?
How can you help someone else going through a difficult change?
In the “Life Changes” episode of “PBS KIDS Talk About,” parents and their children talk about many different changes in their lives. One mother, Monica, shares, “There’s a lot that changes all the time. We’re going to get new family members, we’re going to lose family members. We’re going to have changes with school. Those things are always happening. But we always have each other and loved ones to support us.” Talk about ways that you will support your child as they experience change — and talk about what doesn’t change — like your love and support for them.
